‘Breaking Bad’ Star RJ Mitte Passes Away at 34
RJ Mitte, the actor widely recognized for his role as Walter White Jr. in the critically acclaimed drama series Breaking Bad, has died at the age of 34. His representative confirmed the tragic passing, describing him as a beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate.
Mitte was declared dead on October 12 at what was believed to be his home in Brownsville, Texas, according to Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa, who stated that a post-mortem examination would be performed. The Brownsville Police Department confirmed the actor’s passing, noting that the cause and manner of death remained undetermined as the investigation continued. Police stated that no foul play was suspected.
Authenticity on Screen and Disability Advocacy
Living with cerebral palsy in real life, Mitte drew directly from his own experiences to portray the defiant son of Walter White on the Emmy-winning AMC series, which aired for five seasons from 2008 to 2013. His representative, Sean Reilly, noted that Mitte brought authenticity to the role and built a platform focused on disability awareness and inclusion.
Beyond his work on screen, Mitte served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s. He also established The Mitte Foundation to support philanthropic efforts and community initiatives, utilizing his platform to challenge stereotypes and promote greater representation for people with disabilities.
Reflecting on representation in a 2021 interview with the BBC, Mitte remarked, “Watching the awareness grow around disability representation has been great to see, but breakthroughs sometimes come in pieces and moments instead of larger change.” He earned a Screen Actors Guild Award in 2014 for his work on Breaking Bad and continued to push for more varied and complex depictions of characters with both visible and invisible disabilities in subsequent projects, which included roles in Hannah Montana, Switched at Birth, Westhampton, and the project Talking to Strangers.
Tributes from Co-Stars
Following the news of his passing, members of the Breaking Bad cast shared heartfelt tributes. Bryan Cranston, who played his on-screen father, posted on Instagram that he was in “deep despair,” recalling meeting Mitte when the actor was only 14 years old. “That kid was pretty raw when we started shooting the pilot in February of 2007, but little by little we watched him grow into a really fine actor,” Cranston wrote, noting Mitte’s dedication to advocacy and his refusal to let cerebral palsy serve as an excuse.
Aaron Paul, who portrayed Jesse Pinkman, shared a statement with the Hollywood Reporter expressing that he was heartbroken. Dean Norris, who played Hank Schrader, remembered Mitte as a “sweetheart of a young man” whom he always looked out for on set as a young kid.
