ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has approved a facility allowing citizens to pay sales tax on imported and personally brought mobile phones through easy installments. This approval comes two months after the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) initially announced its tax installment program.
The government had previously abolished the duty-free mobile phone allowance for overseas travelers in July 2019.
According to a circular issued by the FBR, this new provision has been incorporated through an amendment to the Ninth Schedule of the Sales Tax Act, 1990. Under the revised framework, citizens will no longer be required to pay the entire sales tax amount upfront; instead, they can clear their device taxes in manageable installments. However, full payment of all outstanding taxes before the conclusion of the relevant fiscal year remains mandatory.
The FBR further clarified that the installment mechanism will be integrated and operationalized directly through the PTA system.
